Tried, Tested, Loved | The best beauty products we’ve tried this month

TTL Beauty

by Melati Kamaruddin.

Welcome back to WONDERMIKA! I’ve been busy trying all of the products in our beauty room with the team. Not just for fun, but to find out, which ones are the best? Over 55 products were tested from concealers to serums. We focused on beauty benefits, wearability, longevity, application and overall reliability. Can’t wait to find out? Here are the best beauty products we tried this month and LOVE.

BEST FOAM CLEANSER | L’Occitane Immortelle Intense Cleansing Foam

LOCCITANE FOAM20150812_171245

I walked into L’Occitane looking for a new cleanser. My skin was dry (thanks winter!) and I needed rescuing A.S.A.P. I had previously tried four other cleansers but was not satisfied as my skin continued to feel dry. Having been to Provence myself and experiencing the best of French skincare, I decided to go back to L’Occitane. Bam! This cleanser gets all my makeup off and does not leave it feeling dry. It has organic Immortelle floral water in it and that really helps keep the skin supple. I’m a big fan of essential oils and this product is a winner.

What I love about it: I love that the foam feels so smooth and fine on the skin but also does the job well. The foam is not watery, it’s just perfect. I stood in front of the sink just to test how long it can stay on my cheeks and defy gravity. Let’s just say my knees started getting tired! Because the pump is efficient, it releases the foam ‘clean’ so you don’t have to worry about drips (yes, I like keeping my sink top dry!). And the scent is the most wonderful thing I have ever found in a beauty product. Ever. FYI, it’s suitable for all skin types.

BEST FACIAL SCRUB | Clearasil Daily Clear Superfruits Refreshing Scrub

Back to my dry skin problem. I knew that I needed a scrub to rid my skin of dead cells so that the serum and moisturiser could do their job well. So I tried quite a few. Some were too harsh and some did’t give my skin enough of a scrub. The Clearasil Daily Clear Superfruits Refreshing Scrub was the clear winner.

What I love about it:  The sensation of the cleansing beads on my skin. It gives you that satisfaction of scrubbing your skin but it’s still gentle enough to be used daily. And I love that it contains a blend of raspberry and cranberry extracts which are known for their antioxidant properties and Vitamin B. It also promises to cleanse and exfoliate to keep your skin clearer.

BEST ANTI-AGEING SERUM | Jeunesse Luminesce Cellular Rejuvenation Serum

To be completely honest with you, I tried the Jeunesse Luminesce Cellular Rejuvenation Serum without any expectations . Because I had never heard of it before, when it came in the mail, I actually put off trying it for two weeks. Well, that was a regret! I finally gave it a shot and the rest is history. I can see a big difference in my skin as the serum works its magic and I definitely recommend this moisturiser to anyone. According to the packaging, it contains an exclusive, patent-pending growth factor complex derived from adult stem cells, which helps diminishes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Sound freaky? Maybe. But wait till you see your skin drink it up.

What I love about it: Definitely the fact that it was produced using fantastic research. This product is hypoallergenic and paraben-free so that’s great news. I try to use products that do not have cancer causing agents and Paraben is something I try to stay away from. |BUY IT HERE|

BEST FACIAL MASK | Jeunesse Luminesce Ultimate Lifting Masque

Because I had tried the serum prior to the mask, giving this product a shot was a no-brainer. The mask felt really good on the skin during application as well as treatment time. Like all gel masks, just remember to apply a generous layer so that it would be easier to peel off.

What I love about it: My skin feels great right after and treatment products get absorbed much better too. When the mask is all dried up, it’s like I get to see a snapshot of how my skin would look like if it was perfect. You’ll know what I mean when you try it. |BUY IT HERE|

BEST EYE CREAM | L’Occitane Immortelle Eyecare & Mask Duo Brightening Corrector

Here’s what I was looking for in an eye cream – Something to moisturise and brighten my under-eye without creating those oil seeds when you use something too rich. I also wanted an eye cream which would not crease under makeup or cause a ‘build-up’. I’m happy I tried this as it is the perfect eye cream for me. Ticks all the boxes when it comes to skin benefits and under makeup suitability.

What I love about it: It comes with an applicator that I can use to apply the product to my skin as well as give it a little massage. It’s also small making it handy for those dehydrating flights.

BEST MOISTURISER | L’Occitane Hydra Vital Gel

LOCCITANE GEL20150812_171344

Seeing that spring is just around the corner (and then the Brisbane summer!), I wanted a moisturiser that is not too rich, can hydrate well and looks great under makeup. The L’Occitane Hydra Vital Gel does the job well. My skin does not feel oily when wearing this and it sets pretty quickly so you don’t have to wait for a long time before makeup.

What I love about it: The texture is luxurious yet light. And who can resist the scent of any L’Occitane product, really.

BEST PRIMER | The Body Shop InstaBlur

I actually tried this at The Body Shop home party organised by my friend ‘W’. It was such a fun experience trying new products with your friends. Of over roughly 30 products, this was the best thing that I tried. It’s the best primer that I have found so far. It glides on the skin super easy and just ‘deletes’ your pores leaving smooth skin. This was perfect during summer when I wanted to wear less foundation.

What I love about it: It does exactly what it said it would. Put it on your nose and see the difference. I also like the smell and that it does not look weird under my makeup.

BEST CONCEALER | M.A.C Select Cover-Up

mac concealer

I went from liquid to pencil and back to liquid concealers. The M.A.C Select Cover-Up is by far the best concealer I have ever used. I tried a well-known crayon concealer with Argan oil but it ended up drying up my skin, oddly. Here’s what I considered in my hunt for the best: coverage, ability to not crack with movement, how it sets and ease of application. The thing about finding the right concealer is to consider the above AND getting the right match to your skin tone. I’m lucky this ticked all the boxes. After letting my eye cream set, I apply this under my eyes in a dabbing motion using fingers. It has a light texture and therefore is easy to manipulate/spread. After setting it with powder, it basically sits there until I remove it off. I’ve gone swimming, walking and exercising in it – it stays on.

What I love about it: It’s long lasting and does not crack as much. I’d say chances of it cracking after a long day is 5% (for my skin).

BEST STICK FOUNDATION | Revlon Photo Ready Insta-Fix

It was a beautiful morning in Sydney. My family and I were going jungle tracking up in the Blue Mountains. I didn’t really want any makeup on but I thought I’d just give this a try. The coverage is good and it leaves a beautiful and smooth finish. It kept my skin matte despite the whole adventure we had in the mountains. Wow.

What I love about it: It’s just the right texture and thickness. That it’s in a stick form, you can carry it on a flight, touch up at a parking lot, basically anywhere (even in the lift when no one is looking!).

Trust me when I say that I have tried enough eyebrow pencils to know this is the best! I’ve tried pencils that are too soft and then they melt on you and when you try to wipe them off, they just smear away. Urgh. I’ve also tried pencils that don’t glide on your skin because they are too dry? But this one. This M.A.C pencil is the winner. And I didn’t really look for it. I got called by my headhunter one day and asked if I could go for an interview. With no makeup on, I said yes. And then ran to the nearest M.A.C to get a ‘new face’.  I’m glad I took this baby home.

What I love about it: It’s self-propelling, self-sharpening, brow defining. The tip is fine enough if you want to fake single hairs. It has amazing pigment to create a realistic eyebrow and it stays on forever (until you wipe it off with tissue or wash with cleanser). It has that perfect balance of last-a-bility vs. wash-a-bility (forgive me for creating those words).

BEST EYEBROW KIT | Elf Eyebrow Kit

Thank you Manda Wilde for recommending this brand to me.  One try and I love it! I have a few from Elf that I bought from Kmart (yup!) but after trying a few eyebrow kits from many brands, this one really impressed me. The gel has enough pigment to fill in the gaps and the powder sets it in. The dual head tiny brush that comes with the kit is really helpful and it’s great that this kit has a mirror.

What I love about it: The fact that it is so cheap (less than $5) and has everything you need – brow gel, powder, brush with two ends and a good mirror.

BEST EYELINER | Maybelline Master Precise Liquid Liner

We’ve actually featured this before on WONDERMIKA. But since its first debut, we’ve not been able to find ANY eyeliner that can beat the Maybelline Master Precise Liquid Liner. It is THE best eyeliner we have ever tested. We don’t have to worry about looking for a new eyeliner now for the next 50 years (don’t you dare discontinue this one, Maybelline).

What I love about it: Everything. It has intense blank pigment (which is what you want in an eyeliner), application is super easy as the brush has the right level of firmness, it lasts forever and cleansing it off is easy with warm water or regular cleanser. I’ve gone swimming, golfing and it stays on.

BEST CONTOUR KIT | Anastasia Beverly Hills Contour Kit

Do not ask me why I have not written about strobing. But just for the purpose of this list, let’s look at the contour kit. I just wanted to know what the fuss was about. The whole world was raving about the Anastasia Beverly Hills Contour Kit. Is it really good? YES, it is. It has a lot of pigment in it, a little goes a long way. With six shades to play with (five matte and one shimmer), you can really do great things with this. I just wished that it came with a mirror.

What I love about it: The great pigment, six options to play with, really fine shimmer and durability – let’s not ask how many times I’ve dropped it.

BEST BLUSHER | Savvy Blusher

This was another lucky try. I bought this at Priceline and never looked back. For the price (less than $5), it has a good amount of pigment in it compared to other blushers within the same price range leading up to the $15++ ones. It’s really a basic blusher, no frills. But it does the job. Well.

What I love about it: It’s a good quality product packaged in an unbelievably affordable price.

BEST LIPSTICK | Sportsgirl Pout About It Lipstick

I love the shades of the lipsticks at Sportsgirl. This lipstick was judged solely on the colours (sorry!). Having said that, not many brands are successful in recreating runway shades. Sportsgirl has truly nailed it.

What I love about it: The colours are so close to runway shades and the price is reasonable. How can you not love that.

BEST SHAVER | Schick Intuition Pure Nourishment Shaver with Coconut Milk & Almond Oil

What a great shaver. And they were right on the Intuition part. I love that it gives out a nice lather for you to shave against, keeping your skin from being scratched. The handle is a generous size making handling it super easy.

What I love about it: It comes with a suction cup. You can stick it onto the wall in your shower cubicle and use it as you shower. Or stick it up by the sink like I did there. Hanging it on the wall lets it dry properly without the blades rusting so quickly.

BEST PERFUME | Calvin Klein cK One

Let me start by saying that this is a completely personal choice. I’ve used cK One ages ago and have always loved it. I’ve tried so many scents over the years and this one keeps on winning (besides my other favourite, cK Be). I needed a scent that can go from work to special occasions and what can I say. I’m completely in love with One. If it was a person, cK One would be sexy but never tries too hard. Just perfect the way it is.

What I love about it: It’s versatility, balance between sexiness and simplicity and how it smells after a long day.

There you go. Which one will you try?
