Samantha Mariko is our Blogger of The Week (BOTW)! Mariko is a half-Japanese model and musician from Orange County, California, currently living in Tokyo, Japan. We love following Mariko not only for her fashion photos but for letting us experience Japan through her eyes! It’s a breath of fresh air. Her style is simple with an edge and although she plays a lot with black, white and grey, it doesn’t get tired. And we just love Mariko’s cute bob! If you read her blog, SamanthaMariko.com, you’ll get a peek into Mariko’s life as a blogger in Japan. Read our interview with her…
W: How different is it living in Japan than in the US?
S: It is very different. In California where I grew up, there is such a chill vibe that I never felt overwhelmed, ever. But in Tokyo, people live for their work, everyday is fast-paced, and there are many times I felt so stressed and overwhelmed. But you do it all over again the next day. I’ve never felt so busy in my life til I moved to Japan!
W: What is your daily routine like? Or is there a routine?
S: I do have a routine – during the week, I take an hour and a half to get ready for work, including skincare, makeup, doing my hair, choosing my outfit, eating a light breakfast, and doing some yoga or stretches. After work, I’ll usually eat my dinner, take a bath and unwind, respond to blog comments or prepare new content, sometimes practice my singing at a nearby studio. It really depends, though. I can have a pretty irregular schedule sometimes.
W: Where do you like to shop the most?
S: In Japan, I love shopping in Harajuku, Omotesando and Shibuya (see above photo) for mainstream brands. I also do online shopping, and occasionally buy clothes from my work, Le Ciel Bleu (www.lcb.co.jp).
W: What are the top fashion looks in Japan at the moment?
S: Colorful Harajuku fashion is always the craze, I think the style represented by 109 brands are always at the top, like MURUA, SLY, and EMODA. I personally prefer edgier, high-end brands like Yohji Yamamoto, Comme de Garcon and Issey Miyake.
W: Best places to take street snaps?
S: Anywhere, really. I usually have my photos taken in Tokyo, usually Harajuku/Omotesando area. You can always find street style inspiration there as well.
W: What are your future plans?
S: I don’t have any concrete plans because I can’t foresee what will happen even one year from now, but I do have goals to be successful with my modeling, my music and my blog.
