RUNWAY BEAUTY: Natural Bronze 2014 Makeup Look

Runway Beauty - Natural Bronze

From Giles to Thakoon, the “no makeup” look ruled the runway. Although it sounds like all you need is BB cream, well, you will need a little more than that for this 2014 makeup look which is also a classic. Pay attention to your “canvas” by treating your skin, priming your face, concealing and applying a good foundation plus a quick spritz of Evian to seal the makeup in. But don’t just take my word for it, I’ve rounded up several tutorials for you to get the look:

Here’s a tutorial on how to fake great skin if you have acne/pimples. Watch it!

BEAUTIFUL shoes are the foundation of any fashionable woman’s wardrobe, and as the editor of American Vogue, Anna Wintour has access to more stylish skyscraper heels than she could ever wear.

So why, then, has the legendary fashion editor insisted on wearing the same pair of nude, pointy-toed slingbacks not just to every London Fashion Week show she has attended over the past few days, but almost everywhere she has been since 1994, when they were first made-to-measure for the editor by Manolo Blahnik himself?

Blahnik showed his shoes at London Fashion Week for the first time this Monday, when he revealed his reason for doing so: “I wanted to get more in touch with normal people.”

His shoes are not the most expensive out there, but still hover around $850 a pair, so the idea that he is connecting with ‘normal’ is slightly moot.

More importantly, he unveiled his shoes for next spring: they come in a riot of colours, from daffodil yellow to sugary pink, acid green and scarlet, and are adorned with tassels, bows, silver buckles, gold brocade, cream embroidery, zebra spots, florals … All of which seemed infinitely more exciting than the nude pair, which have two intersecting straps over the front of the foot, that Anna Wintour seems to have had surgically attached to her tootsies.

So why does the fashion editor love them so much?

Well, first off, these shoes are not really nude. They are produced expressly for Anna in two skin-coloured tones that perfectly suit her colouring.

Blahnik made a ‘last’ – a wooden model of Wintour’s foot – around which he sculpts her shoes, meaning each pair will fit her contours exactly. Which means they are supremely comfy. A godsend, given she sometimes has to walk from limo to kerb.

Ms Wintour takes delivery of several identical pairs each season, as she is very aware of that cardinal fashion rule: never wear a pair of shoes two days running, as they need time to breathe. The open toe reveals her “meticulously groomed” feet (Manolo Blahnik’s words, not mine).

Like Kate Middleton, who for years has seemed melded to her LK Bennett nude patent courts, Ms Wintour understands that nude goes with everything: jazzy prints, and every colour in the rainbow. Nude is far more summery than black, and less severe. A closed shoe or, worse, an ankle strap, only serves to shorten the leg, and Ms Wintour “has fantastic legs” (again, MB’s words, not mine).

Anna Wintour realises that her shoes, as she sits with her legs crossed in the front row, will appear in almost every catwalk photo for the rest of eternity, and, perhaps, can’t be bothered to choose a fresh design for every appearance, to be picked over by people like me.

Her Manolos, like her glossy bob, love of fur and pastel cardies, are a trademark, a constant in an ever-changing sea of trends and mistakes and monstrosities that give you blisters.

I applaud her, actually, opting for the boring over the barking, even as her sharp stiletto heel sank into the soggy turf at the Topshop show on Sunday afternoon.

At least we now know that, contrary to all reports, she doesn’t walk on water after all.

Get updated on the new Spring makeup & hair trends 2014 here. These are the easiest and most natural looks that can be worn by anyone. Trends spotted from LFW, Milan to NYFW are: “No makeup” makeup, “Out of bed” hair, Bold Lips, “Tucked-in” Hair, Sleek Hair, Turban and Feline Eyeliner.

The key to this look is in perfecting your canvas. Think foundation, concealers and primers but in small amounts. Not to “cover” the skin but more like balancing skin tones.

Michael Kors | Perfected skin was enhanced with bronzer and groomed brows, whilst hair was styled in dishevelled up-dos.

Giles | It was “no make-up” make-up at Giles, with flawless skin and subtle contouring.

Jason Wu | Lips were left natural-looking, whilst skin was dewy and flawless – emphasised by slicked-back hair.

Ruffian | Two-tone manicures acted as a contrast to the pared-back beauty look, which saw eyes defined with pale grey shadow.

Donna Karan | Eyes were defined with bronze shadow, cheeks were contoured in peach hues and lips were painted a glossy orange-red.

Derek Lam | Make-up was minimal, save for a wash of metallic eye shadow and blocks of black liner at the outer corners of the eyes.

Thakoon | Lashes were the focus, with skin kept fresh and natural-looking.

Urban Decay - Naked2

Editor’s Note: I’ve personally tried NAKED 2 by Urban Decay and also Bobbi Brown makeup therefore highly recommend them to you. I also have tried all the brands above but in other ranges and they do suit my skin. Get samples from the counters first to see how it can work. Go to the counters to experiment with the colours and see how long they last on you or how you like the texture.

Yes. Out of bed hair. It looks effortless but you do need some products to work your fingers through your hair to get that texture. The great thing is that this look doesn’t need perfection. The beauty is in its messiness.

Giles | Hair was swept into textured side plaits with flyaways at the front, whilst nails were studded with Swarovski crystals.

Burberry Prorsum |Hair was given a casual and lived-in feel, in keeping with Burberry’s usual relaxed style.

Christopher Kane | A healthy, youthful beauty look was paired with just-washed, natural hair at Christopher Kane.

Calvin Klein Collection | The Calvin Klein make-up was characteristically pared-back, but this time with the addition of pale lips and eyes defined with brown shadow. Hair was casually tousled.

Rodarte |From the front, hair was worn in messy quiffs, with side ponytails.

I must say that out of all the trends, this is one trend that I didn’t see coming. If you have a skinny scarf, you can already try this. It’s a very useful style for windy days or outdoor parties where you want to keep your hair in place but look chic.

Marc by Marc Jacobs | Hair was either left in loose waves or tucked into skinny scarves.

Vera Wang | Hair was pulled into smooth ponytails and tucked into headbands.

Eyeliner is a fabulous way to add that exotic look to your face. It also adds a little drama to your look. Eyeliner is also relatively easier to do than eye shadow blending. If you have steady hands, liquid liner is best. If not, try pencils which you can “seal” with clear powder.

Rodarte | Nails were given a tortoiseshell manicure, whilst eyes were defined with feline-inspired black liner.

Marc Jacobs | All models wore choppy blonde wigs with darker roots.

Marc Jacobs Beauty - Magic Marc'er Precision Pen Stila - High Shine Liquid Vinyl Eye LinerBobbi Brown - Long-Wear Gel EyelinerSuper Liner Superliner Gel Eyeliner

Editor’s Note: I have personally tried Bobbi Brown and Stila’s eyeliners and they are truly non-smudge as well as sweat and oily skin proof. I’ve tried Sephora’s eyeliner but it smudges when your skin gets oily. The L’Oreal gel eyeliner is really long lasting and is at an affordable price too. Maybelline and Silky Girl also has gel eyeliners that I dare say, can compete with that of Bobbi Brown’s. Chanel eyeliners are also fantastic for their ease of usage and long lasting ability.

For those who have straight hair and have been thinking that it’s boring, well, surprise! Your hair is a trend. Simply keep it sleek minus flyaways. Instead of focusing on getting volume, pay attention getting healthy hair.

Prabal Gurung | Models’ hair was slicked into side-parted waves.

Helmut Lang | Red-stained lips were the focus of the Helmut Lang make-up.

Jason Wu | From the back, hair was tied low at the nape of the neck, and fastened with metal accessories.

Helmut Lang | Hair was parted at the front and loosely tied at the nape of the neck.

Donna Karan | The make-up’s healthy glow was complemented by poker-straight hair, the front of which was smoothed back and fastened with a clip.

Caudalie - Divine Oilghd - Candy Collection 1Phyto - Phytodéfrisant Botanical Straightening Balm

Editor’s Note: I love Phyto because their products are fabulous and really work for my hair. Caudalie is a great French brand to try too. Both Caudalie and Phyto are French. I’ve met the scientist for Phyto and they are really passionate about creating products that work.

This is my favourite look. Clean, almost bare face with a pop of bold coloured lipstick. Bright lips give you the illusion that you’re done up when all it takes is a swipe on the lips.

Rag & Bone | Lips were painted a matte neon red, and eyes were subtly defined.

Rag & Bone | Hair was centre-parted and slicked down, the lengths styled in neat, glossy waves.

Prabal Gurung |Models’ eyes were extended with feline liner flicks, whilst nails were painted in a variety of bright shades.

Altuzarra | White eye shadow contrasted with stamped-on red lips and ethereally pale skin.

Altuzarra | Hair was smoothed into low ponytails.

Marc Jacobs Beauty - Lovemarc - Lip GelNARS - LipstickShiseido - Perfect Rouge

Editor’s Note: I love beauty bargains. Apart from these wonderful brands, I’ve tried Sportsgirl Pout About It lipstick as well as INNOXA lipstick. Both were less than AU$10 and the colours were as though they came right off the runway show! INNOXA can be slightly drying but just prepare your lips with a balm and voila! To get precise lip shape, blot lips with loose powder to prevent your lipstick from “bleeding”

This is not a surprise. Obviously I’m a turban-loving fashionista. It’s great to dress up your look in a unique way. A fashion forward way too. Stay tuned for our turban story coming soon. With a headpiece like this, makeup can be very minimal making it suitable for those who love light makeup but want to stand out at the same time.

Derek Lam | Hair was worn in casual ponytails or loose and topped with check-print turbans.
