MELATI’S FASHION STYLING PORTFOLIO

FASHION STYLING

Hi, thanks for stopping by! I’ve been getting requests to put up my own fashion styling portfolio by some super supportive friends and colleagues. So here it is! I’ve been a fashion stylist for almost 10 years now. Close to 7 years with international leading magazines and currently a freelancer and fashion columnist for Brisbane Times. These are some of my work. I’m super detailed and expect nothing but perfection from myself and the crew. You’ll see that I can style different looks and I’m not limited to just one or two styles. Isn’t that what stylists are suppose to be able to do? =) I promise to update this space from time to time. Feel free to drop me a line if you have  any questions for me and I’ll try my best to answer/help you.

Love, Mel.

FASHION / PHUKET, THAILAND

We shot this in a beautiful resort in Phuket called Khatatani. The entire crew was flewn in from Kuala Lumpur. We were supposed to travel the day before but I was hospitalised for exhaustion. Yup! Anyway, a day later, we’re all in Phuket with two people to a suite except for me. I had a huge suite to myself but I’m a chicken. So my styling assistant (now writer) Diandra stayed with me. And she ended up having a ghost sleep on her arm that she could not move it. True story. Shoot started at the crack of dawn. I was up at 3am with the team to start makeup. It was an amazing experience and I’ll do it again!

I had the opportunity to shoot some pieces from local designers and the designs were all superb. We had an industrial fan blow continuously from below the model. Yes. And additional Bosch blowers to lift specific areas. I remember wearing food grade gloves to avoid snagging the chiffon. Oh, the stresses of a stylist! Glowing makeup by the ever so talented Cindy.

Shannon is such an amazing person. It was super easy shooting her. I bet Carole can testify to that. Shannon was leaving for Milan and we thought we’d catch her before she spreads her wings. All outfits by Sambag. Sambag is an Australian brand by designer Sam Wagner. When I met Sam last year she said that she had sold her wedding ring to start her fashion business. And boy was that the best decision she’d ever made!

This was shot in an old hotel in Kuala Lumpur. The furnishings were opulent, fit for a queen. And yes, Queen Elizabeth did spend the night there once. The theme was about party dressing where I mixed dresses in luxe fabrics with sensational accessories.

I just love the bright pieces in this shoot. The idea was to mix brights with neutrals (beige, black,  white) to get a look that’s wearable. Wearing bold colors can be frightening for some and adding neutrals is an easy way to start.

What can I say? Paris is amazing. I think this was my 4th time in Paris and finally I get to shoot fashion. The other times I spent going to beauty launches, fashion week and there was once I interviewed Pat McGrath! *sigh* Anyway, this shoot was an adventure. Michele got us a huge people mover and that was our transport and changing room. The model looks happy in the shots but you have no idea how freezing it was! It was winter in Paris and my editor wanted a happy shoot. Voila! It helped that the entire team was Paris based so they gave me tips on the location. It was the year I fell in love with France. So I came back, learned the language and voila. Je peux parler Francais maintenant =)

Stradbroke Island is breathtakingly beautiful. We took a ferry to get here. 30 mins. The ocean was rolling and dolphins were jumping out of the water as if welcoming us to the island. Steve has an amazing eye and needless to say, Maria nailed the makeup. Amanda, the model, is now a style blogger under the Wondermika blogger management. She’s still goofy.
